The book It Starts with Us unfolds immediately from where we were left off in the tale of Atlas and Lily in It Ends with Us. The love story continues with Atlas and Lily through It Starts with Us, nearly a year after their last encounter. This second volume added more in-depth details to dive into Atlas and Lily’s life story. It is highly recommended to just read the first book (It Ends with Us) before starting to read this one. This book is mainly focused on accepting and fighting for love and family. The moral of the story is how to merge lives together despite obstacles, difficulties, and pain.
Readers will be excited to finally get to know Atlas’s side of the story, as the first book didn’t give them the chance to dive into and learn more about his past, character, and life. Lily and her ex-husband, Ryle, have just settled when she suddenly meets her first love, Atlas, again. Atlas and Lily meet again after almost two years separated. Lily is a single mom and business owner, while Atlas has recently opened his second restaurant. When Atlas asks her for a date, she immediately says yes. They want to be together, but both have complications in their lives.
On the other hand, Lily is a very strong female character, and she wants the best for her daughter. Her only concern was Emmy and protecting her daughter, even from her own father. Ryle (Lily’s abusive ex-husband), definitely does not deserve forgiveness, and what he kept putting Lily through was heartbreaking, and even the situation can be tough when a child is involved. So, it is commendable how Lily was strong and brave enough to stand up and do what was best for her daughter and herself.
All the side characters in this novel—Allysa (Ryle’s sister) and her husband, Marshall, Theo (Atlas’s friend’s teenage kid), and Josh (Atlas’s half-brother)—are well written as well. It Ends with Us was definitely heartbreaking, but It Starts with Us breaks our hearts again in different ways, but still, you can breathe happily because the book ends in the way, we all hope for. On the whole, this book is everything you are looking for as a fan of It Ends With Us.
